02Approach

Traffic is not the product. Demand is.

It's easy to win rankings for terms nobody buys on. Here's where we do the opposite of what the last agency probably did.

SEO decisions: the usual approach compared with how we run it
Decision The usual approach How we run it
Keyword selection Chase high volume, report on impressions and average position. Start from commercial intent — which searches sit closest to a purchase, whatever the volume.
Content brief Hit a word count, match what already ranks, publish, move on. Written to answer and then convert, with the next step designed into the page.
Link building Guest posts and paid placements on sites nobody reads. Earned coverage from data-led stories, on publications your customers actually read.
After it ranks Move to the next page. Positions quietly decay over the following year. Scheduled refreshes and internal linking. Holding costs less than climbing twice.
Reporting A monthly deck of rankings and sessions, disconnected from the P&L. Organic tied to revenue and pipeline in GA4, in a dashboard you can open any day.

04Timeline

SEO is slow, then it isn't.

What we expect to happen and when, so nobody spends month four wondering whether it's working.

  1. Months 1–2

    Foundations

Audit, tracking rebuild, crawl and speed fixes. Early wins come from cleanup, not new content.

  2. Months 3–5

    Build

Category pages rewritten, first guides live, internal linking laid in. Mid-tail terms start moving.

  3. Months 6–9

    Compound

Digital PR lands, authority rises, and the head terms you actually care about become winnable.

  4. Months 9–12

    Defend

Refreshes, cannibalisation control and conversion work on pages already ranking.

05 Proof
DTC furniture retailer

Eleven months, one channel, no extra media spend.

The client had 4,000 products across a category structure built by the developer, not by anyone who had looked at a search. Sixty pages competed with each other for the same terms and the site took four seconds to render a product image.

We consolidated the duplicates, rebuilt the category architecture around how people actually search for furniture, shipped 24 buying guides, and ran a digital PR programme off their own sales data.

They found revenue in pages we already owned. That was the part we didn't expect.

06 Is it a fit

We're not right for everyone.

Worth knowing now rather than three weeks into a proposal neither of us wanted.

A good fit if

  • You already have some organic revenue to build on
  • Somebody internally can approve content and ship code
  • You can commit to six months before judging it
  • You'd rather hear a hard read than a comfortable one
  • Your margins survive a six to nine month payback

Probably not if

  • You need leads inside 30 days — run paid instead
  • Nobody can sign off a page without a committee
  • You want volume content at the lowest cost per word
  • The site is mid-rebuild with no launch date
  • You're looking for links you can buy by the dozen

08Questions

Before you ask, honest answers.

The questions that come up on nearly every first call, answered directly and transparently.

06 key answers

How long until we see results?

Technical fixes can move things within weeks, usually by reclaiming pages that were already close. New content ranking meaningfully takes three to six months, and competitive head terms take longer. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is either buying links or picking terms nobody searches.

Do we need to rebuild the website?

Usually not. Most sites have more headroom in pages they already own than anyone expects. If a rebuild genuinely is the blocker we'll say so in the audit and name the limitation — but we don't sell development, so there's nothing in it for us either way.

Who actually does the work?

The people who ran your audit. We're a small senior team with no junior pod to hand accounts to after the pitch. Content is written by specialists in your category rather than a general content mill.

Can you work alongside our in-house team?

That's how most of our accounts run. We cover whatever your team doesn't — often technical and digital PR while they own content — and we're happy to train the in-house side rather than keep the knowledge to ourselves.

What happens if it isn't working?

We agree the model up front, so we both know what month six should look like. If we're off it, that's the conversation on the review call — including whether the budget is better spent elsewhere. We've told clients to stop before.

Do you work with our competitors?

No. We take one client per category per market, and it's written into the contract. It's part of why we only take on four new accounts a year.
